It was bound to happen sooner or later. University of Missouri WR Danario Alexander was among the cuts as the Rams trimmed 15 names from their roster Monday, August 27, 2012. NFL teams were required to shrink their lists from 90 to 75, with additional clipping scheduled for later in the week. Teams have to be down to 53 by Friday evening. Other high profile names among the dismissed, including quarterback Vince Young, former Rams offensive tackle Alex Barron and former Rams kicker Josh Brown.Danario Alexander, 24, has promising talent but has been plagued injuries, which sidelined him throughout his two-year tenure with the Rams. His physical issues rendered him mostly inactive during training camp and preseason. Alexander participated in only a couple of practices and did not play in any of the team’s exhibition games.

This time around it was hamstring problems keeping the 6-foot-5, 220-pound receiver sidelined. During his college football career Alexander has had five operations on his left knee alone. When he has been able to play, he has been effective.

In two seasons, he appeared in 18 games and started seven. He caught 46 passes for 737 yards and three touchdowns, including a 38-yard scoring reception in his NFL debut against San Diego in 2010. With a new coaching staff in place, one that has yet to see Alexander perform, his inability to practice put the writing on the wall.

The Rams also placed veteran defensive tackle Trevor Laws on injured reserve. A five-year veteran, the 6-1, 304-pound Laws was signed as a free agent. But he missed most of camp with a knee issue, a problem that also bothered him last season with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fisher said his staff knew Laws had injury issues but thought he would be able to bounce back and help the defense. Besides Alexander and Laws, 13 players were released: wide receivers Charles Gilbert and Brandyn Harvey; running backs Calvin Middleton and Nicholas Schweiger; offensive linemen Ryan McKee and Kevin Hughes; linebackers Alex Hoffman-Ellis and Noah Keller; tight end Brody Eldridge; fullback Todd Anderson; kicker Garrett Lindholm; long snapper Travis Tripucka; and defensive lineman John Gill.

The Arizona Cardinals had big problems and high expectations in 2011/2012. The Big Red’s failure last year was their inconsistency at many positions but the quarterback position, occupied by Kevin Kolb and John Skelton was a train wreck. The Cardinals did not qualify for the playoffs and find themselves rebuilding in 2013. Both Kolb and Skelton both performed comparatively well and it was not easy to choose between them.

There was a glimpse of hope when the Indianapolis Colts shocked everyone and released their veteran quarterback Peyton Manning, four-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the National Football League (NFL). Many teams including Cardinals tried their luck to lure Manning to their city but the QB veteran ended up joining the Denver Broncos.

The team has spent the offseason so far by giving equal opportunities to both Kevin Kolb and John Skelton to prove their talent and the same is expected to be the case in training camp and preseason games. It is not clear when Ken Whisenhunt will announce the starting quarterback but some early reports have indicated that they might do it before preseason (which would make sense).

Kevin Kolb who is more experienced than Skelton has only played one season with the Cardinals while John Skelton has spent two seasons in Arizona Cardinal Organization. Both quarterbacks still do not know who will be the starter and who will serve as backup and this situation is somewhat becoming difficult to handle for both of them.

According to the Arizona Cardinals official website, Kolb said of the situation:

“It’s so odd to have (the competition) because a lot of times you don’t have it that way. Everyone has handled it well so far. The biggest thing is you just concentrate on doing your job.”

Skelton also shared his thoughts:

“If (competition) means five reps in practice, you make the most of it. If you are working with the second unit, or the first team, you have to make the most out of it.”

Follow all the rip-roaring hiliarity on twitter!

Davis was working the young crowd with the microphone, sharing stories of his personal struggles in high school, and his mischievous ways with the law — he was on probation as a sixth grader. In the final portion of Davis’ motivational speech, the San Francisco 49er talked about never giving up on your aspirations. Davis even dropped some of his own. “I will be the best tight end to ever play this game. I have a vision,” echoed Davis to a thunderous applause.

Vernon Davis has an uphill battle to become football’s greatest tight end of all-time. Names like Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharpe, John Mackey and Kellen Winslow Sr. are going to be pretty insurmountable to overcome.

Steven Jackson has visited 15 different countries over the past four years. He has attended World Cup Soccer matches in South Africa, viewed the Mona Lisa painting up close at the Louvre in Paris, and walked through the catacombs of the Roman Coliseum. He visited Australia and New Zealand on one trip after the 2010 season and followed that up with a jaunt through England, Italy and France several months later.

The 28-year-old Jackson is again expected to come up big on the field this season. Despite his seventh consecutive year with 1,000 yards rushing, the Rams went 2-14 in 2011. Steven racked up his usual numbers (1,145 yards on the ground, 333 receiving), Jackson is looking to bounce back from one of the most painful seasons of his eight-year career.

The Rams have looked sharp under the direction of new coach Jeff Fisher, who has led his club through a spirited workout s this month. Coach Fisher is hoping to build confidence in his squad and says the team accomplished a lot during last week’s organized team activities and he was impressed with the tempo on Tuesday, as well.

Jackson, who ran for a career-best 1,528 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2006, feels the team has accomplished what it set out to do during the offseason. New faces, including 10 draft choices, will make for some strong competition when training camp begins July 29, 2012.

The Rams have signed eight of their 10 draft choices. Cornerback Trumaine Johnson, a third round pick out of Montana, and Cornerback Janoris Jenkins, a second-round choice from North Alabama, remain unsigned. WR Brian Quick, a second round choice out of Appalachian State, is the latest to sign. C Scott Wells, a nine-year veteran from Tennessee, will miss the mini-camp due to an excused absence.

When the Seattle Seahawks went out and grabbed free agent quarterback Matt Flynn from the Green Bay Packers, many suspected the backup signal-caller was destined to take the starting job from Tarvaris Jackson.

“We’re going to stay with Tarvaris as the number one,” Pete Carroll said. “He maintained that through all the OTAs and all that. But Matt is really ready to go and so is Russell.”

“They’ve performed very well in our camps, their numbers are really close. They just deserve the chance to keep battling, and we’ll figure it out in time. I keep telling our people up there [Seattle] that I’m going to be patient, so you’re going to have to be patient.”

Deep Thoughts by Tarvaris Jackson

Everybody know that female that think she just ice cream cold but you too much of a nice guy to tell her she not. Ijs #randomthought

— Tarvaris Jackson (@7tjackson) April 14, 2012

While that knowledge may not indicate any rock solid decisions have been made yet, it is the most straight forward bit of insight the SeaHawks head coach has delivered as yet. All three quarterbacks have been splitting time relatively equally with the first team. Many times Carroll has let it be known he expects the race to take us all into the preseason despite how much it would help to name a starter sooner.

“It would help us decide sooner just to get things together,” Carroll said. “I gotta’ wait until we can figure it out, and we’re doing everything we can to even out the reps. … We’re going to have to get into preseason to know anything about some games and then we’ll try to go from there, we’ll do it when we can.”

With the last comment, Carroll acknowledges the public’s need for some sort of concrete leaning he has with his naming of Jackson as his No. 1 QB heading into training camp in late July. However, as is the case with most races, the victor is not crowned until they have crossed the finish line. Until that happens, these three are still just hitting their stride.

The San Francisco 49ers have finally announced a four-year contract with first-round draft choice A.J. Jenkins. Jenkins, who was also recruited by Florida, Florida State, Miami and South Carolina, was one of the more heralded recruits brought to Illinois by Ron Zook. He saw immediate action in 2008 as a true freshman, playing in all 12 games, including one start (11-287-3). He started three games in 2009 as a sophomore, but saw his production drop a bit (10-123-1), missing two games with a knee injury.

Jenkins started nine games in 2010 and finished as the team’s leading receiver (56-749-7). However, he really emerged in 2011 as a senior, posting team-highs in every receiving category, including a Big Ten-best 84 receptions for 1,196 yards and 7 TDs. Jenkins isn’t a burner or consistent vertical threat, but he plays fast and with a degree of confidence. He is more quick than fast and covers a lot of ground in the short half of the field and is slippery after the catch. He has a lanky frame and will be overmatched physically by most cornerbacks in the NFL, but should be a solid underneath option.

Jenkins doesn’t appear to have the strength or natural speed to hold up on the outside as a pro, but could develop into a solid No. 3 or 4 for a team if he becomes more disciplined as a route-runner and devotes himself to the game of football.

That leaves the St. Louis Rams’ Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson, both cornerbacks, as the only 2012 draft choices from NFC West teams without announced agreements.

The St Louis Rams’ decision to trade down from the second and sixth overall choices lowered the stakes for negotiations. Some higher choices remain unsigned while agents and teams haggle over guarantees.

The STL Convention and Visitors Commission (CVC) voted to enter arbitration with the Rams concerning future renovations to the Edward Jones Dome. The two sides will choose three arbitrators to hear the case, which could last for six months or more. There was no way that the Rams were going to accept the CVC’s rather low $48 and $124 million offers to renovate the Dome. And there was no way that the CVC was going to accept the Rams’ $700 million renovation plan.

The CVC’s proposals didn’t do enough to make the Dome a first-tier stadium, and the Rams’ offer, while spectacular, likely wouldn’t have been approved by city taxpayers. Now the arbitrators will decide between the proposals presented by both sides, or they can create their own plan. Either way, it’s going to be a long process.

“Hopefully with the assistance of an arbitrator we’ll be more successful in coming to a conclusion that is in the best interest of both parties,” CVC spokesman Brian Hall said. The Rams declined comment.

The dome was built with taxpayer funding from the city, St. Louis County and the state of Missouri. The 30-year lease signed when the Rams moved to St. Louis from Los Angeles prior to the 1995 season requires that the stadium be among the top quarter of NFL stadiums in 15 separate categories. If it isn’t, the team can break the lease after the 2014 season, raising concerns the Rams might leave St. Louis.

Negotiations began early this year. The CVC privately proposed to the Rams a modest $48 million plan in January that would have been publicly funded. When that was rejected, the CVC in February announced a plan for $124 million in improvements that included better amenities and a massive new scoreboard. It would have required to Rams to pay for $64 million of the cost. Voter approval in the city and county would have been required for the rest.

The St Louis Rams did not intend for their proposal to be publicly released but Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster released it against the team’s wishes on May 14, 2012 following open records requests from media. The arbitrators will either endorse the CVC plan, the Rams’ plan, or develop their own version. The CVC will then have 60 days to decide whether to move forward with that plan or allow the Rams to end the lease.

Janoris Jenkins is a smooth, natural man-to-man defender. He can turn his hips and run with elite receivers. While at Florida, he effectively covered the likes of Julio Jones and Alshon Jeffery, receivers who were several inches taller and far thicker than Jenkins. Jenkins loses very little speed when cutting and gets into good position when defending deep passes. He can jump routes in front of him and undercuts routes over the middle of the field.

Janoris Jenkins is willing to throw his body around. He slices through blockers to get involved in tackles on wide receiver screens. He anticipates running plays and is willing to charge into position, set the edge, and engage a blocker, even if that blocker swallows him whole. Jenkins uses his speed well when blitzing off the edge, though he could show a little more urgency when flushing the quarterback. Jenkins has good hands and could be effective in the return game. He is quick and nifty with the ball in his hands.

You can read hundreds of police reports and small-town newspaper accounts of players getting into trouble on their school campus, at the local bar, or while driving down Rural Route 66. About 90 percent of them are best written off as youthful transgressions. Then you come across a prospect who was arrested three times for marijuana possession, twice in the span of four months following the 2010 season. His second arrest prompted new Florida head coach Will Muschamp to kick him off the team, leading to Jenkins’ transfer to North Alabama. He was then ejected for throwing a punch at a Delta State player on October 13 and had to sit out the first half of UNA’s next game (West Alabama). Jenkins’ also found time to father four children with three different women. Not sure how to classify this information.

After being dismissed by new Florida coach Will Muschamp following a second charge involving marijuana, Jenkins finished his career at North Alabama last season. He might have qualified for the NFL supplemental draft last year, but preferred to take time to rehabilitate his off-field image and a shoulder injury so pro scouts would judge him more on his on-field abilities. And pro scouts think his on-field ability is extraordinary. Jenkins has that rare combination of instincts, quickness and agility needed to be a truly great cover cornerback. Scouts at the Senior Bowl likened his play to that of several-time All-Pro Asante Samuel (Philadelphia Eagles). Jenkins flashed his talents in 2010 at Florida when he held two players selected in the top six of last year’s draft to an average of 38 yards a game — Georgia’s A. J. Green (No. 4 pick, Cincinnati Bengals) and Alabama’s Julio Jones (No. 6 pick, Atlanta Falcons. At the Scouting Combine he was unofficially clocked at 4.46 seconds in 40 yards. He should be able to step in immediately and cover those pesky slot receivers as well as help as a punt returner.
