Sporting News Report: Frontiere's heirs put Rams up for sale

Longtime St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Frontiere's heirs have put the team up for sale, according to a report on Yahoo! Sports.

"I know that they are definitely in play," former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo told the website. "Georgia's kids (son Chip Rosenbloom and daughter Lucia Rodriguez) have decided to sell the team. I've talked to some people who are brokering things, and they've told me about the price and what the deal might entail."

NFL sources told Yahoo! Sports that the price tag is between $850 million and $900 million. A potential twist to the sale could be the possible relocation back to the Los Angeles market. The Rams left Anaheim for St. Louis before the 1995 season, and DeBartolo says the Rams' lease at the Edward Jones Dome expires in 2012.

The fact that the Rams are on the block isn't much of a surprise in the wake of Frontiere's death earlier this year. Rams president John Shaw declined comment on the team's potential sale.

DeBartolo, who owned the San Francisco 49ers from 1977 to 1997, says he has had preliminary discussions with an intermediary about buying the Rams but described his interest as "slight." DeBartolo was forced to sell his stake in the 49ers in 1998 after he pled guilty to a felony charge as a result in his involvement in a Louisiana gaming scandal. But one AFC owner told Yahoo! Sports that DeBartolo likely would be approved as an owner.
